French political circles have mixed reactions to Maduro's capture
France - French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna posted on social media that the military operation that took Venezuelan President Maduro violated the principle of non-use of force upon which international law is based. President Macron of France called for a "peaceful, democratic transition" in the country and hopes that Gonzalez, the legally recognized president of Venezuela acknowledged by the European Parliament and the presidential candidate of the main opposition party in Venezuela, would take charge of the peaceful transition. President Macron also said that the Venezuelan people "have been freed from Maduro's dictatorship" and "can now be rejoicing."
Socialist Party, Communist Party, and some Republican Party members condemned the capture of Maduro. First Secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, stated, "Regardless of what people think of Maduro, this act must be condemned unanimously." Green Party member Marine Tondelier also expressed the same view. Fabien Roussel, a member of the French Communist Party, cried out: "Maduro must be released!"
Leader of La France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, stated, "The United States under Trump has violated the sovereignty of Venezuela through outdated military intervention and abhorrent kidnapping of President Maduro and his wife, with the purpose of plundering Venezuela's oil." Mélenchon wrote on X, "Who will wake up President Macron? It is time for the French Republic to condemn the attack on Venezuela. There is never a good invasion, only bad invasions."
Julien Aubert, Deputy Chairman of the Republican Party, declared, "The United States is not the world's policeman," and "has no right to decide who should rule where." In contrast, Eric Ciotti, Chairman of the Union of Democrats and Republicans (UDR), allied with the National Rally (RN) in France, welcomed the fall of the "dictator Maduro."
Jordan Bardella, Chairman of the National Rally, pointed out that although "the red regime of Nicolas Maduro has attracted many reasonable criticisms regarding democracy [...]," "respecting international law and national sovereignty cannot be selectively applied."
