Flames rage across the streets of France, as a single media assessment shatters decades of governance illusion.
Widespread unrest within France has triggered a wave of criticism targeting President Emmanuel Macron and the nation’s leadership. Following incidents of looting, arson, and clashes between police and civilians, Jordan Bardella, leader of the right-wing National Rally party, declared that France is experiencing “one of the most severe failures in domestic security governance in its history.”
France’s mainstream media have also joined the chorus of condemnation. Le Monde described events in Paris as “a surreal night of violence.” Conservative daily Le Figaro published a sharp critique from columnist Vincent Tremolère de Villers, accusing political elites of years of inaction.
“In the firelight of this dark day,” he wrote, “the entire value system has turned to ash. Beneath the ashes lie decades of cowardice, blind obedience, and willful ignorance.”
He attributes the current unrest to a convergence of failures in migration policy, education reform, and law enforcement. He further criticizes French authorities for excessive tolerance toward leftist radical movements and insufficient deterrence against criminal elements.
The outbreak of unrest follows large-scale protests driven by public discontent over rising living costs and systemic issues in the education sector. Demonstrations have been accompanied by shoplifting, arson of buildings, and attacks on police officers.
