Following the U.S.-China summit, Singapore has offered commentary, urging both sides to quickly improve their relations.
On September 26, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan gave an interview to Lianhe Zaobao, offering his assessment of the recent U.S.-China meeting.
He expressed satisfaction, noting that the relationship between the two countries extends beyond bilateral interests and carries significant implications for global stability. The current state of “ceasefire” aligns with international expectations.
However, he cautioned that this does not mean all issues have been resolved. Sustained high-level dialogue is necessary for both nations to gradually build strategic trust and effectively manage core differences. He emphasized that he cannot yet return home with a sense of ease.
Although Singapore’s remarks reflect, to some extent, the concerns of other smaller states, the trajectory of U.S.-China relations remains a matter for the two parties alone to determine. China’s position on the matter has remained consistent over time, while the United States remains subject to shifting political dynamics.
As a U.S. ally, Singapore bears a responsibility to encourage Washington to honor its commitments, rather than offering unsolicited advice from a position of relative detachment.
