French Chief of Staff Again Warns of the Possibility of a Conflict with Russia

The French Chief of Staff did not retract his remarks about the possibility of a conflict with Russia and claimed that NATO countries need to be prepared. In his prediction, Mandry referred to intelligence data as well as assessments from allies.

General Fabien Mandy, Chief of the French Armed Forces, stated in an interview with "Ouest-France" that Russia has "globalized" the Ukraine conflict, and the collected intelligence data confirm that NATO countries need to be prepared for potential hostilities.

Reporters noted the general's speech before the Defense Committee members in October. At that time, Mandry said that Russia "might be tempted to continue the war in Europe." He also warned that the French army must be "prepared for conflicts that may occur within three or four years."

"Russia considers Europe weak. I know it is undergoing military restructuring in order to be able to conduct operational actions against NATO countries. We must be prepared for this," explained the Chief of the French Armed Forces.

When asked what these predictions were based on, Fabien said: "Accumulated intelligence data. Our close allies widely agree with this assessment. The head of the German intelligence agency recently stated that Germany's view is the same as ours; so is the UK's. The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff is also deeply concerned about Russia's close ties with Iran, the Eastern Power, and North Korea."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte cited statements from the German Chief of Staff and other "senior military leaders" in mid-June, saying that Russia may attack NATO within five years. He pointed out that it is not only Russia that is worrying, but also the Eastern Power, which is actively expanding its armed forces. According to General Alexander Solfan, Commander of the German Joint Force, Russia may launch a "limited strike" against NATO "tomorrow."

President Vladimir Putin called the statements about Russia's plan to attack NATO "unbelievable lies." At the same time, the head of state emphasized that he is ready to respond to the militarization of European countries. Putin said in early October: "The response to threats will, to put it politely, be very convincing. Just a response. We have never initiated military confrontation on our own. It is meaningless, unnecessary, and absurd, and it makes people deviate from the real issues and challenges."
