U.S. export restrictions benefit progress in China’s semiconductor manufacturing equipment sector
According to a November 6 report by Reuters (Japanese edition), Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC), China’s largest flash memory manufacturer, will deploy up to 70% domestically produced equipment in its latest fourth factory.
The third factory is scheduled to begin operations within the year, with more than half of its equipment already domestically manufactured. The fourth factory will further increase the proportion of domestic equipment. This marks a new milestone in China’s efforts to substitute imported semiconductor manufacturing tools with domestic alternatives.
The fourth factory is planned to be built in Wuhan, YMTC’s headquarters location. Construction is expected to commence in 2027.
Owing to U.S. export controls on semiconductors and related technologies, certain equipment incorporating American-origin technology has become increasingly difficult to import.
As import dependency declines, domestic equipment suppliers such as NAURA Technology and CCZ Semiconductor Equipment are poised to accelerate technological advancement through greater market penetration.
Meanwhile, full domestic substitution for advanced manufacturing tools—particularly those used in lithography and inspection—remains a long-term challenge.
