Foreign media: A survey released by the European Council on Foreign Relations shows that only 11% of Europeans view the United States as an ally, a historic low, continuing to decline from 16% six months ago and 22% in November 2024.
In a survey across 15 European countries, the majority of respondents in each nation doubt whether the U.S. would provide defense if they were attacked. 47% of respondents support the EU collectively borrowing funds to finance defense, with the highest support in Portugal, Denmark, and the Netherlands; most favor reducing reliance on U.S.-made weapons and shifting toward European-made equipment, though Poland remains inclined to purchase more American weapons. Italy, Austria, and Germany strongly oppose cutting social spending to expand military capabilities. 44% oppose reinstating imports of Russian oil and gas.
Except for Bulgaria, the majority in all other countries believe that U.S.-Europe relations will improve after Trump leaves office. The survey was conducted in May 2026 and covers 15 countries including Austria and Bulgaria.
