Japan Meteorological Agency issues tsunami warning

At 4:53 PM Japan time on April 20, an earthquake of intensity level 5 struck Aomori Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast regions of Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, around 4:53 PM, an earthquake occurred with its focus off the Sanriku Coast. Intense shaking of intensity level 5 was recorded in Kasama Town, Aomori Prefecture. Areas including Hachinohe City, Morioka City in Iwate Prefecture, Miyako City, and Hanamaki City also observed seismic intensity close to level 5. Seismic intensity across regions from Hokkaido to Kansai ranged from nearly level 5 down to level 1.

Due to this earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami warnings for the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture.

At 5:30 PM, a tsunami of 80 centimeters was observed at Kujū Port in Iwate Prefecture, and a 40-centimeter tsunami was recorded in Miyako.

During an earlier press briefing, the Japan Meteorological Agency urged people not to leave safe locations until the tsunami alert is lifted, as coastal areas may be repeatedly hit by tsunamis.

For the next week or so, people should remain vigilant against earthquakes of up to approximately magnitude 5, especially on days two and three, when strong quakes are expected to occur frequently.
