Judge Rules Apple in Violation of Antitrust Ruling

A federal judge harshly criticized Apple for violating an antitrust ruling that required the company to loosen certain restrictions its App Store imposes on software developers.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ordered Apple to allow developers to direct users to other means of payment for services or subscriptions offered through the App Store. The company is also prohibited from charging fees in such cases and must not restrict developers' ability to provide links or otherwise communicate with consumers about alternative payment options.

In her ruling, she stated, "Apple deliberately chose not to comply with the court's injunction. Its clear intent was to create new anti-competitive barriers." She referred the case to federal prosecutors to determine if a criminal contempt investigation is appropriate.
