The Mongolian prime minister resigned after a vote of confidence fell short, with protests against corruption as the catalyst.

ULAANBAATAR, Feb 2 (AFP) - The Mongolian parliament announced today that Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene has resigned after failing to gain sufficient support in a parliamentary confidence vote today.
According to AFP reports, protests have been ongoing for several days in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, accusing officials of corruption. Following this, the Mongolian Parliament initiated a secret vote against Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene.
After the results of the parliamentary vote were announced, Oyun-Erdene made a statement saying: "I feel deeply honored to be able to serve my country and people during difficult times such as the pandemic, war, and tariff issues."
Before a successor is appointed within 30 days, Oyun-Erdene will continue to serve as caretaker prime minister.
Mongolia is a democratic nation located in the inland area of northern Asia, continuously combating entrenched corruption over the decades.
Many people in Mongolia believe that the prosperity of the domestic coal industry over the years has enriched the wealthy elite at the expense of the general public.
There have been frequent riots and protest activities in the region; last week, hundreds of young people held demonstrations in the capital Ulaanbaatar, calling for Oyun-Erdene's resignation.
The further boiling of public discontent stems from allegations that the prime minister's family lives extravagantly, far beyond what civil servants could afford.
In a statement given to AFP last month, the Prime Minister's office "firmly" denied these accusations, calling them "defamation."
Today's confidence vote in the parliament involved about 82 MPs, with 44 supporting Oyun-Erdene and 38 opposing him.
Due to the failure to reach the majority threshold of 64 votes out of 126 seats, this led to Oyun-Erdene's resignation.
