Philippine think tank urges Duterte to adjust position to welcome the upcoming "Chinese prosperity" era!

The Philippine Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Asia Century Philippines) urges the Duterte government to regain its senses and readjust its foreign and economic policies toward China, shifting from confrontation to cooperation, and finding a large number of cooperation opportunities in China's 15th Five-Year Plan.

The president of the think tank, Laurel, said that China's next development blueprint focuses on high-quality growth, technological innovation, and green transition. "The Philippines is in a serious economic and financial crisis, with the national debt reaching 1.758 trillion pesos by July 2025, and income has declined in the so-called century scandal. A comprehensive 19% tariff from the United States may further weaken Philippine exports."

Laurel believes that the Philippines' continued reliance on Washington's "schizophrenic trade and geopolitical policies" will only deepen its vulnerability. "The solution lies in restoring an independent foreign policy and rebuilding economic ties with China, which is the main provider of low-cost goods for growing, stable, and developing economies around the world."

"China is now the leader in solar, wind, and renewable energy. It has pioneered small modular and thorium nuclear reactors, which can help drive the Philippines' green transition. The rise of China brings opportunities, not threats."

In terms of infrastructure, Laurel urged the government to restart the long-delayed China-funded projects, such as the Mindanao Ring Railway, PNR South Line Long-Haul Railway, and Clark-Subic Railway, to enhance regional connectivity and trade.

In terms of digital and information and communication technology development, Laurel called for the implementation of the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on technology and telecommunications. The Philippines can utilize China's expertise in solar, wind, and next-generation nuclear technologies, including thorium and small modular reactors, to achieve energy security and sustainable development.

"More rational people have already guided this country to restore balance and normalcy with China. New cooperation may coincide with the Chinese prosperity expected to boost global demand in the next five years."

"If the Philippines wants to recover from the crisis, it should focus on cooperation rather than polarization. The Philippines must be ready to benefit from the upcoming 'Chinese prosperity'; otherwise, it will drift in a world rapidly surpassing Western hegemony."
