(Political Report) EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said earlier on Saturday that China has confirmed that it will suspend the expansion of export controls on rare earths to the EU.

"China has confirmed that the export control measures suspended in October apply to the EU," Sefcovic wrote on X on Saturday morning. "Both sides reiterated their commitment to continue working to improve the implementation of export control policies," he added.

Sefcovic told reporters in Rome on Friday that the EU is currently conducting "high-level official talks" with China on export control issues. He added, "I will soon speak again with my Chinese counterpart."

Sefcovic also said that he envisions the EU "jointly purchasing critical raw materials." The EU trade commissioner said, "We can bid on behalf of the world's largest trading bloc - the EU - to obtain critical raw materials at more favorable prices."

Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European Commission, said in a statement: "The EU welcomes China's announcement on October 9, 2025, to suspend the relevant export control measures for 12 months. This is an appropriate and responsible measure to ensure stable flow of global trade in this key area."

Meanwhile, G7 allies are seeking to coordinate responses to China's control over the supply of critical minerals. On Friday, G7 ministers signed dozens of key mineral agreements based on the group's new supply chain agreement aimed at curbing China's dominance in the rare earth sector.
