Foreign media: In Maigaiti County, on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, a unique agricultural experiment is unfolding: freshwater crayfish, originally native to rivers in Australia, are now being farmed on a commercial scale in this region where 90% of the land is covered by sand. Local farms harvest between 250 and 300 kilograms of crayfish daily for market supply.
This project stems from a technology transfer initiative known as "eastern crayfish moving west," aimed at developing aquaculture using saline-alkali soils and abandoned water pits in Xinjiang. Through recirculating aquaculture systems, greenhouse technologies, and salinity control techniques, the region has overcome longstanding challenges associated with raising aquatic species in arid environments. The model not only diversifies local diets but also enhances the utilization efficiency of underused land and water resources, serving as an example of successful integration between agricultural technology transfer and ecological resource development.
