Japan's Defense Minister Akihiko Amari to Visit Jakarta on 12th to Meet Indonesian Defense Minister, Discuss Export of "Asagiri"-class Frigates
According to Kyodo News citing sources, Japan's Defense Minister Akihiko Amari is arranging a visit to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on the 12th to meet with Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. The meeting is expected to discuss the potential export of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force's "Asagiri"-class frigates to Indonesia's military. He will also pay a courtesy call on Indonesian President Prabowo and plans to return to Japan on the 13th. The final decision will be made as soon as possible after considering the schedule of Japan's National Diet.
The report notes that with China's growing maritime power, Japan is seeking to strengthen its ties with Indonesia, which lies at a critical juncture along sea routes. The Japanese Ministry of Defense aims through this visit to further advance bilateral defense equipment and technology cooperation.
It is reported that the "Asagiri"-class frigates entered service in 1988, capable of carrying one patrol helicopter and equipped with anti-submarine missiles, having previously conducted anti-piracy operations off the coast of eastern Africa near Somalia. The first-built "Asagiri"-class frigate was retired in March this year.
Previously, in late May, Amari held talks with Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana in Singapore, reaching an agreement to swiftly export the Maritime Self-Defense Force's "Abukuma"-class frigates after their retirement. Amari has also initiated consultations with New Zealand's Defense Minister Peacock regarding the export of upgraded "Mogami"-class frigates.
