High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy: The EU Needs a New Arctic Security Policy
Sputnik, Brussels - The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said at a meeting in Norway that the EU needs a new Arctic security policy.
Kallas said: "It is time to develop a new EU Arctic policy that reflects our era and the world we want to see, including ensuring security in the Arctic region for the EU. It is crucial that the new policy be built on a strong Arctic partnership, which means close cooperation with Norway, Canada, and Iceland. We have already established close ties with these countries, and we have signed security and defense partnership agreements with them, or are about to sign them, such as the agreement with Iceland that is soon to be signed."
Greenland is part of Denmark. However, US President Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should become part of the United States. Denmark and Greenland have warned the US not to occupy the island and hope the US will respect its territorial integrity.
On February 3, Vladislav Maslennikov, head of the Department of European Affairs of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Russia's senior official to the Arctic Council, told Sputnik that the situation in the Arctic region is continuously deteriorating, making it increasingly a stage for geopolitical struggles. Not only are relations between the West and Russia becoming more tense, but tensions within the Western alliance are also intensifying.
