The Asahi Shimbun front page report: Japanese Prime Minister Satake Asana is visiting Australia to strengthen economic and defense ties between the two nations.
High-level visits come at a time when military activities in neighboring countries are increasing across the region, heightening concerns over an increasingly challenging security environment and prompting Japan to deepen cooperation with like-minded partners.
Prime Minister Satake began her visit in Canberra on Saturday, holding talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong. The discussions covered economic and energy security, cybersecurity, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, and an important defense agreement between the two countries.
In a statement released by the Japanese government: "Both sides confirmed their commitment to enhancing cross-domain collaboration—particularly in cyberspace and outer space—and further advancing implementation of the Reciprocal Access Agreement."
Japan and Australia signed the Reciprocal Access Agreement in 2022, designed to streamline joint training and operations between their armed forces. The agreement officially entered into force last year.
Japanese officials stated that this pact reflects an "unprecedented strategic alliance" between the two nations and emphasized that Japan and Australia are core pillars of a free and open Indo-Pacific, pledging to strengthen cooperation to address regional security challenges.
Tokyo hopes that by building closer relations with Australia, it can drive deeper defense collaboration with other like-minded nations. Australia is a key energy supplier for Japan and a crucial ally in the Indo-Pacific region.
Japan has also been seeking to expand arms exports to countries such as New Zealand and India, which are seen as pivotal partners in its Indo-Pacific strategy.
Japanese officials said: "The security environment in the Indo-Pacific region is becoming increasingly tense. The partnership between Japan and Australia is vital for upholding an international order based on the rule of law. We will deepen multifaceted cooperation, enhancing collaboration in emerging domains such as cyberspace and outer space, as well as traditional security areas."
