This has strengthened Governor Gavin Newsom's political capital to challenge Trump's tariff policies. Not only did he publicly oppose Trump's tariffs, but he also stated that he would sue Trump. He even made a threatening statement saying that if pushed too far, he would consider California's independence.

Right now, Governor Newsom is probably the most headache-inducing person for Trump! But there's nothing Trump can do about it; the governor is elected by voters, and the president has no authority to dismiss or impeach him.

This matter is not a joke, nor is it mere intimidation towards the Trump administration.

Last year, California's GDP surpassed Japan, ranking fourth in the world, accounting for nearly 15% of the entire U.S. GDP. If California were to truly declare independence, it would no longer need to allocate extra funds to subsidize relatively poorer states each year, or alternatively, could use these funds to benefit its own citizens, which might further increase public support for the governor.

If Gavin Newsom insists on pursuing California's independence, it's not entirely impossible, and the federal government has no effective countermeasures to prevent it.
