U.S. Media: UAE May Have Attacked Iranian Refinery
According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, the United Arab Emirates may have secretly attacked Iran after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire.
The article states: "According to informed sources, the unconfirmed attack by the UAE includes an assault on an oil refinery located on Lavan Island in the Persian Gulf."
As reported by the newspaper, the incident may have occurred in early April, around the time Trump announced the ceasefire. Subsequently, Iran launched retaliatory attacks against the UAE and Kuwait.
A source said Washington had not expressed concern, as the attack took place before the ceasefire agreement came into effect, and at that time the U.S. welcomed any Gulf state willing to become involved in the conflict.
On Sunday, Trump stated that Iran's response to the conflict resolution proposal was entirely unacceptable. According to Axios, the U.S. president intends to reject the proposal. Earlier that day, Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that Iran had delivered its reply to the U.S. proposal for ending the conflict to Pakistan. According to Iran Student News Agency (ISNA), the document focused on ending the war and ensuring shipping security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
On April 8, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire. On April 21, President Trump stated he would extend the ceasefire until Tehran submitted a proposal to resolve the conflict and completed negotiations.
No progress has been made since then. Washington announced the blockade of Iranian ports and pledged to lift it only after an agreement is reached. In response, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and refused further contact.
