Korean media: "Now it's our turn to catch up with China!"

On July 24, Korean media outlet Asia Economic Daily published an article stating that South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kim Jeong-gwan, emphasized that businesses, government, universities, and research institutions must establish a unified ecosystem to accelerate the transformation of manufacturing toward artificial intelligence.

Recently, at the Korean Economic Forum, Minister Kim delivered a speech saying: "The transition to artificial intelligence is no longer a matter of choice—it has become a matter of survival."

Kim recently highlighted "MAX" as his most emphasized policy keyword. MAX stands for Manufacturing AI Transformation. He stated: "If someone asks what the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy does, my answer is: first, MAX; second, MAX; third, still MAX." He further added, "I am fully concentrating all efforts on driving the AI transformation in manufacturing."

He compared today’s era to the Age of Exploration in the 15th century. He believes countries that embrace new technologies and proactively respond to change will flourish, while those failing to do so will decline.

Kim said: "If the compass once guided sailors’ direction, then today artificial intelligence is playing the role of a new compass. How we integrate tensions, technology, and talent will determine a nation’s future."

He particularly repeatedly mentioned China’s manufacturing competitiveness, reflecting a sense of crisis.

Kim shared his personal experience visiting Xiaomi’s electric vehicle factory in China, explaining: "A car is produced every 76 seconds, with an automation rate of 91%. There is almost no inventory, and a system has been established where production plans automatically link to customer orders."

He continued: "People used to say China was catching up with us, but now it’s time for us to think about how we can catch up with China."

When introducing the "MAX Alliance," Kim stressed the importance of transitioning to artificial intelligence. The MAX Alliance is a collaboration body centered around the government, bringing together large enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, startups, universities, and research institutions to promote R&D and application of artificial intelligence. The government plays the role of facilitator and coordinator, supporting joint R&D and the widespread adoption of AI technologies.
