Several European countries have called on the EU to "strengthen" regulatory actions against platforms such as Shein.

Eight European countries, including France, wrote a joint letter to the EU this week, urging the EU to "strengthen" regulatory actions against platforms such as Shein.

Under the leadership of France, eight European countries sent a joint letter to the EU this week, calling on the European Commission and EU member states to "strengthen" and "coordinate efforts" to address the "systemic risks" posed by e-commerce platforms such as Shein.

The eight European countries include Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Hungary, and Poland. In the letter, they wrote, "We call on the European Commission to mobilize strongly and persistently in addressing the unfair competition from e-commerce platforms in third countries."

The European Commission has already requested Shein to provide information, a move that could lead to the initiation of an investigation. Serge Lepeltier, the French Minister of Trade, has urged the EU to investigate Shein.

On Monday, the French Minister of Trade stated at a meeting of the "Competitiveness Council" in Brussels that the investigation "must be accompanied by temporary measures to mitigate the systemic risks caused by Shein and other platforms that have failed to control them." The French Minister also called for additional sanctions to be implemented in the ongoing procedures targeting Temu and AliExpress.

In early November, the French government attempted through administrative procedures to suspend the operation of Shein's French platform after discovering children's sexual dolls being sold on the Shein platform, but the attempt failed. The French government then submitted the request for suspension to the judicial authorities, and the court will make a ruling on December 19.

However, due to the possibility of another failure, France is pressuring the European Commission to intervene, as combating the systemic risks posed by large e-commerce platforms falls under the competence of the EU level.
