Pentagon discusses withdrawing up to 10,000 troops from Eastern Europe.

According to six U.S. and European officials familiar with the matter, a proposal under consideration to withdraw up to 10,000 troops from Eastern Europe has raised concerns across two continents that this move might embolden Putin.

These forces are part of the 20,000 troops deployed by the Biden administration since the establishment of the Congressional Budget Office in 2022, aimed at strengthening the defense of Ukraine's border countries. The specific numbers are still being negotiated, but the proposal may include withdrawing half of the troops sent by Biden.

The Trump administration has clearly expressed its desire for European allies to take greater responsibility for their own defense, thereby enabling the U.S. to focus its military resources on China and other priorities.
