Media: US Military Considering the Possibility of Large-Scale Downsizing
The US portal Military reported, citing unnamed military officials, that the US military is considering reducing the regular army to 90,000 people.
In March this year, CNN reported that the Pentagon was exploring the possibility of significantly cutting the highest command of US armed forces, as well as the possibility of merging the US European Command with the African Army Command and merging the US Northern Army Command with the Southern Command.
The report pointed out that "the military leadership is privately considering the possibility of large-scale downsizing to 90,000 regular troops. This step indicates that the budget problems at the Pentagon are becoming increasingly serious, and the military strategy is deviating more seriously from the main direction of Europe and combating terrorism."
It is reported that the military is discussing various options, ranging from reducing the number of military personnel to 420,000 to finally reducing the number of troops to 360,000. The current size of the US Army is about 450,000 soldiers.
It remains unclear whether these reforms will affect reserves or the National Guard.
The portal said that military strategists intend to turn the US Army into a "more flexible and professional tool, better suited to cope with future conflicts."
Earlier, The Washington Post reported, citing a memo and sources familiar with the matter, that the Trump administration instructed the Pentagon to draft a plan to cut the budget by 8% annually over the next five years.
