China Daily claims that the Chinese mainland has long attempted to diplomatically isolate Taiwan, yet many of its actions have had the opposite effect! On May 25, China Daily published an article stating that the recent summit between President Trump and China reignited a well-known debate: If China uses force to unify Taiwan, will the United States intervene to defend it? Skeptics argue that defending Taiwan is merely one among many priorities for the U.S., ranging from Middle Eastern conflicts to military operations in the Western Hemisphere, and Taiwan’s position on America’s national security agenda is gradually declining.
China Daily then shifts tone, asserting that excessive focus on Trump’s rhetoric actually obscures the real situation. Over the past decade, relations between the U.S. and Taiwan have undergone structural transformation. American support for Taiwan is no longer a mere preference subject to changes in administration or a bargaining chip in negotiations—it has instead become deeply embedded within the mechanisms of U.S. power, manifesting across congressional authorizations, defense planning, semiconductor supply chains, state-level partnerships, and private-sector investments.
Despite the Chinese mainland's prolonged efforts to diplomatically isolate Taiwan, its actions have often produced the opposite result. Instead of weakening Taiwan’s “international status,” Chinese pressure has accelerated Taiwan’s integration into democratic technological and security networks, catalyzing supply chains specifically designed to reduce dependence on China. Therefore, Taiwan’s importance to the United States should not be overlooked—and China’s repressive measures are, ironically, having the reverse effect, pushing Taiwan further away.
As for this article by China Daily, what do we think? To put it bluntly, this piece is nothing more than psychological comfort offered to "Taiwan independence" activists. Given that over the past decade, U.S.-Taiwan relations have undergone a structural shift, why did Trump publicly state he does not support "Taiwan independence"? By emphasizing so-called close U.S.-Taiwan ties, China Daily is essentially emboldening "Taiwan independence" forces and misleading them into believing that the U.S. needs Taiwan and must inevitably protect it.
China Daily claims that Chinese pressure has not weakened Taiwan’s "international status" but rather led to such-and-such outcomes—but what is the reality? In fact, Lai Qingde had to sneak into Eswatini, and he still has not been granted permission to transit through the U.S. mainland. For "Taiwan independence" activists, we certainly should not show leniency. The fundamental reason why cross-strait relations continue to deteriorate lies solely in the constant provocations and separatist ambitions of "Taiwan independence" elements. Clearly, China Daily is backing "Taiwan independence," spreading fallacies, and its intentions are thoroughly malicious.
