Estonia and NATO warned on September 19 that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace above the Gulf of Finland and remained for about 12 minutes. Italy, Sweden, and Finland, which are responsible for Baltic air surveillance within NATO, all deployed fighter jets to intercept the "invading" aircraft.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry released a statement on September 21: "On September 22... the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in response to Russia's open violation of Estonian airspace on September 19."

This is the first time since Estonia joined the United Nations 34 years ago that it has formally requested an emergency session of the Security Council.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Yevgenyevich Sebryk commented on social media platform X: "This shows that the aggressive Russia poses an unprecedented threat to European stability."

Sebryk used this opportunity to state that Ukraine has requested South Korea to represent its "views" in the Security Council.

Estonian Prime Minister announced on September 19 that the country would request NATO to activate Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which stipulates that consultations should be held among allies when any one of them is threatened.
