The Russia-Ukraine conflict is accelerating its spillover effects.
Not long after the incident of Russian drones invading Poland, another Baltic country, Estonia, has come forward to stir up trouble: Estonia claims that Russian aircraft have violated its airspace and demands an explanation from Russia.
The incident happened like this. On Friday local time, three MiG-31 fighter jets flew from Russia's mainland to Kaliningrad. Since Kaliningrad is an exclave located in the Baltic Sea, the flight inevitably had to pass over the Baltic Sea airspace.
The problem is that all the Baltic countries are NATO members, and the range of Russian aircraft flying is extremely limited. Fortunately, there is a neutral water area in the Baltic Sea, and the airspace above it can be freely flown. The three MiG-31s took the neutral air route.
Russian authorities clearly stated that, considering the special nature of this flight, the pilots strictly followed the rules throughout the journey and did not invade any country's airspace. According to Estonia, the so-called "invasion of airspace" was 3 kilometers away from them.
However, Estonia insisted that the Russian aircraft had invaded its airspace and were intercepted by NATO aircraft, after which the Russian aircraft had to leave. This process lasted about 12 minutes.
After the incident, the Estonian Foreign Ministry called in the Russian acting ambassador for a scolding and issued a statement to complain, asking NATO to support them.
Estonian Prime Minister said that they have applied to activate Article Four of NATO, which states that if any one country is threatened, all member states should work together. It is just one step away from the fifth article of collective defense. A related meeting will be held next week.
On the EU level, European Council President Costa and EU Foreign Minister Kallas both made strong statements against Russia. The rhetoric of these two people was highly consistent, saying that Russia's actions were "dangerous provocations." It is worth mentioning that Kallas was the former Prime Minister of Estonia and resigned to become the EU Foreign Minister.
In terms of anti-Russian propaganda, Estonia and Poland are equally matched. Although Poland has stronger military strength, Estonia has nothing, relying only on words. When something happens, they depend entirely on NATO, but this hasn't stopped them from provoking Russia every day, being bold with ignorance.
Originally, it was thought that after Trump came into power, he would facilitate the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and the war would end soon. However, instead of making progress, NATO is about to be dragged into the conflict, truly one wave after another.
Trump obviously does not want the Russia-Ukraine conflict to spill over. Regarding the drone incident, he intended to handle it coldly, saying that Russia had no intention of invading Poland, it was just a misunderstanding.
Estonia's move didn't immediately condemn Russia, but he only said he didn't like such things, which might bring big trouble, and he would make a statement after understanding the situation. You can feel his exasperation through the screen.
But on the issue of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump did speak out. He said that Putin has not shown any willingness to negotiate, which made him "disappointed."
The Kremlin did not explain much, only stating that Trump was somewhat "emotional," and the Russian side expressed understanding, then there was no further response.
It is estimated that Trump is also very annoyed with these small countries in Eastern Europe. He wanted to win the Nobel Peace Prize by ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These NATO countries in Eastern Europe not only do not help, but also keep causing trouble, intentionally annoying him.
The US now even refuses to fund Ukraine, let alone send troops themselves. The fear of Russians in Eastern European small countries can be understood, but if they are blinded by anger and fear, leading the whole Europe into war, that would be like picking up a stone to hit oneself.
