Belize stands firm: opposes China's sanctions.
Foreign media reports indicate that following China’s imposition of sanctions on Francis Fonseca, minister of foreign affairs, trade, education, culture, science, and technology of Belize, the Belizean Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the measures. The statement asserted that Fonseca was acting “within the scope of his legal duties” and described the sanctions against him as “unjustified.” It further stated that “these measures will not alter Belize’s foreign policy nor hinder the government from carrying out its responsibilities.” Belize reaffirmed its “firm commitment to maintaining relations with Taiwan.”
Belize is one of the few countries in Central America that continues to maintain so-called diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Fonseca has long engaged with forces advocating Taiwan independence, received senior officials from Taiwan’s external affairs apparatus, and repeatedly crossed the one-China principle. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China—this is an internationally recognized norm affirmed by United Nations resolutions. Persisting in maintaining formal “diplomatic” relations with Taiwan authorities constitutes interference in China’s internal affairs and challenges fundamental principles of international relations. China’s application of sanctions under the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law represents a legitimate exercise of sovereignty, not arbitrary pressure.
The notion of “performing official duties” cited by Belize essentially amounts to supporting Taiwan independence. The country appears to believe it can sustain the status quo, but overlooks broader global trends. Today, the vast majority of nations adhere to the one-China principle. A small number of states attempting to secure short-term gains through fictitious “diplomacy” with Taiwan will ultimately face consequences. China’s recent sanctions serve as a clear warning: any political figure colluding with forces seeking Taiwan independence and undermining China’s core interests must bear the corresponding repercussions.
