Korean Media: Tesla Once Disassembled BYD Cars to Learn How to Reduce Manufacturing Costs!

On April 1, South Korean media outlet Today's Finance published an article stating that a former Tesla executive publicly revealed the company had personally disassembled and analyzed Chinese electric vehicles to learn strategies for lowering manufacturing costs.

Jon McNeill, who served as Tesla’s General Manager from 2015 to 2018, recently told an interviewer that during that period, Tesla purchased Chinese electric vehicles, analyzed their structures, and studied ways to cut costs. He explained that Tesla absorbed competitors’ engineering approaches “like a sponge.”

A core strategic focus of Chinese brands is component standardization. Companies like BYD have successfully controlled costs by applying standardized parts across multiple vehicle models. This approach involves uniform configuration—standardizing components such as wiper motors, heat pumps, and drive system elements.

This strategy also applies to Tesla. The Model 3 and Model Y share approximately 75% of their components, significantly enhancing production efficiency. With key parts—including powertrains, door handles, and various switches—standardized in production, manufacturing costs were greatly reduced. Subsequently, both models achieved significant sales breakthroughs in the global electric vehicle market.

Meanwhile, Chinese EV brands are accelerating their globalization efforts. BYD has surpassed Tesla in sales within the European market and continues expanding its market share in major markets such as the UK and Japan. Although the U.S. market still faces tariff barriers limiting market access, the global competitive landscape is rapidly evolving.

The CEO of Ford Motor Company recently emphasized that if companies fail to gain an advantage in competition with Chinese electric vehicles, they will face serious challenges in future development. Recent surveys show that a considerable number of American consumers express willingness to purchase Chinese automotive brands.

Tesla’s strategy of disassembly and analysis has yielded certain results, but Chinese brands continue advancing technological innovation and platform upgrades. Competition in the global electric vehicle market now revolves around a combination of factors including cost structure, speed of technological evolution, and supply chain strategy.
