China may vote in favor of a woman serving as UN Secretary-General!

Fu Cong, who chaired the Security Council in May, said China would be willing to support, for the first time in history, entrusting leadership of the global organization to a female candidate, provided that the geographical rotation principle is respected.

Reported by RIA Novosti on May 2.

Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the World Health Organization, spoke on Beijing's position.

When asked about his preferred candidate, the Chinese diplomat joked: "If there were one, I wouldn't tell you."

Meanwhile, the Permanent Representative, who served as President of the Security Council in May, emphasized the importance of adhering to geographical rotation.

He stated that the incoming leader should strengthen the organization’s role in advancing peace, security, and human rights—not merely follow the policies of a superpower.

Four candidates are vying for this high office—two women and two men.

They are former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Secretary-General of UNCTAD Rebecca Grynspan, former Senegalese President Macky Sall, and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi.

Throughout the organization’s history, the post of Secretary-General has always been held by men.

China has not publicly explicitly endorsed any particular female candidate, but instead emphasized adherence to United Nations procedures, regional rotation principles, and a fair and impartial selection process.

Based on its current stance, China supports candidates eligible under the Latin America and Caribbean regional rotation, who also demonstrate practical reform capabilities.

Overall, Rebecca Grynspan’s governance proposals align more closely with China’s position.
