American military journal '1945' reported on April 22, citing former US officials and defense industry insiders, that "Vietnam has reached an agreement with the US government to purchase US-made F-16 fighters". The journal reported that the Vietnamese government hopes to purchase the latest F-16V model, with a quantity of at least 24 aircraft.
Vietnam is traditionally a country that uses Russian weapons, possessing fighters such as SU-35 and SU-22. Now it wants to switch to F-16V. Hong Kong's 'South China Morning Post' (SCMP) commented that "this is actually the end of the 70-year-old Russian-Vietnamese defense cooperation".
This is part of Vietnam's efforts to avoid a tariff bomb, as it has already put all its available chips on the table.
