NBC News: U.S. Border City Economy on the Brink of Collapse Due to Canadian Boycott
According to NBC News, the economy of border towns in the state of Washington has traditionally relied on Canadian shoppers. After Canadians boycotted visiting these towns in response to President Trump's trade tariffs, the local economies have been pushed to the brink of collapse.
The TV station reported that Blaine City in the state of Washington is a case in point. Canadians used to frequently visit this city to buy gasoline, as well as dairy products and other goods that are usually cheaper in the United States. After the implementation of the tariff policy, more and more Canadians chose to stay at home.
"Their boycott has put the business owners in Blaine City and surrounding Whatcom County in a difficult situation," the report said. "They face the question of how long the regional economy can sustain itself with the number of tourists from British Columbia, Canada, which supports the local economy, decreasing."
According to data from the Border Policy Research Institute of Western Washington University, the number of Canadian vehicles entering the United States through three border checkpoints in Whatcom County decreased by 65,000 in the first three weeks of March, a drop of approximately 42% compared to the same period last year.
