Trump Calls for Pardon of Netanyahu

According to China Central Television, on the 12th local time, the spokesperson for the President of Israel issued a statement saying that U.S. President Trump formally wrote a letter to the Israeli President Herzog, requesting a "full pardon" for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in connection with his case.

In the letter, Trump stated that he respects the independence of the Israeli judicial system, but believes that the multiple charges against Netanyahu are "politically motivated and baseless prosecutions."

The spokesperson for the President of Israel said that President Herzog "highly respects President Trump," however, anyone seeking a presidential pardon must submit an application according to formal procedures.

Netanyahu is currently facing three charges: bribery, fraud, and breach of public trust, making him the first prime minister in Israeli history to be charged while in office. The Minister of National Security from the far-right party, Ben-Gvir, called on Herzog to pardon Netanyahu on the same day. Meanwhile, the leader of the Israeli opposition, Lapid, stated that according to Israeli law, the prerequisite for receiving a pardon is to admit guilt and express remorse.
