Korean Media: The Only Core Energy Storage System Company in South Korea, How About China?

On March 19, the Korean media "Nikkei" published an article stating that LG Energy Solution became the first battery company in South Korea to enter the list of major suppliers in the global energy storage system (ESS) market.

In the latest ESS Tier 1 list released by the market research institution Bloomberg New Energy Finance, LG Energy Solution became the only South Korean company on the list. Last year, no South Korean companies made the list.

Out of the 59 companies on this list, 48 are Chinese companies. American company Tesla has been listed for two consecutive years. By comparison, Samsung SDI and SK On were not on the list.

The ESS Tier 1 rating by Bloomberg New Energy Finance comprehensively considers factors such as the financial stability, financing capabilities, and experience in implementing large-scale projects of manufacturers. One of the criteria is that, within the past two years, they must have successfully delivered ESS products to at least three third-party customers in projects of 10 megawatt-hours or more. ESS related to renewable energy projects will not be included in the evaluation.

LG Energy Solution has expanded large-scale ESS supply contracts centered around North America in the past two years. As of the end of last year, the cumulative order size of ESS exceeded 140 gigawatt-hours.
