Gaza Strip has over 68,000 deaths, thousands may be buried under the ruins
Rick Peeperkorn, WHO Representative in Palestine and the occupied territories, said that since the escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict in October 2023, more than 68,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip, and thousands may still be buried under the ruins.
He stated at a press conference in Geneva, "According to our data, 68,234 people have died and 170,373 have been injured since October 2023."
At the same time, he pointed out that these numbers do not include the situation of people buried under the ruins in the Gaza Strip.
He said that during the week from October 15 to 22, 77 bodies were found under the ruins in the Gaza Strip. It is estimated that thousands of people may still be trapped under the ruins.
This death toll will further increase due to those who did not receive timely necessary medical care.
Peeperkorn again pointed out that only a small part of the medical system in the Gaza Strip is currently operational. According to WHO data, restoring the medical system in the Gaza Strip will require approximately 700 million US dollars in funding.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimates that the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will require 7 billion US dollars in funding support.
