Foreign media: Japan publicly conducted its first test flight of the air-launched version of the upgraded 12-type anti-ship missile on July 30 at Gifu Base, with two inert missiles carried by a Mitsubishi F-2B fighter jet to verify aerodynamic characteristics and structural load performance.
The missile has a range of approximately 1,000 kilometers, marking a significant milestone in Japan's development of multi-domain counterattack capabilities: the ground-launched variant has already entered service under the name "25-type" in March, extending Japan's domestically produced anti-ship missile range from around 200 km to about 1,000 km; the naval-launched and air-launched versions are expected to be deployed next fiscal year, while the submarine-launched variant is currently under development.
Experts point out that the air-launched version provides platform flexibility, enabling strikes launched from above Kyushu or even Honshu, greatly increasing the difficulty for adversaries to predict, fundamentally altering the regional strategic landscape.
