Germany: Has obtained assurance from China on rare earth supply
AFP reported on Thursday, November 20, that German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said in Singapore that after a three-day visit to China, he had received "clear" assurances from the Chinese side regarding the acquisition of rare earths and critical raw materials.
Lindner stated that China has made clear commitments regarding rare earths and critical raw materials to ensure reliable access channels and secure supply chains. He added, "This is a very important issue, and it has been publicly confirmed; we will remind the Chinese side to fulfill this." The vice chancellor stayed in China for three days, participated in the annual "Sino-German Financial and Economic Dialogue," and was accompanied by representatives from the German banking sector.
He also said, "I believe I have contributed to improving the quality of Sino-German relations, and he never thought that Sino-German relations [were in danger or decline]."
This was the first visit to China by a member of the Merkel government, following the sudden cancellation of the Foreign Minister's scheduled visit to China at the end of October.
Previously, German and European companies were affected by China's export controls on rare earths and semiconductors, while China expressed dissatisfaction with the EU's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. However, according to official data released on Wednesday, China has once again become Germany's largest trading partner this year, surpassing the United States, whose tariff policies severely impacted Germany's export model.
