The first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has arrived, drawing considerable attention due to its large size and rapid intensification in a short period of time.

Hurricane Irene, the fifth named storm of the season and the first to reach major hurricane status, formed on August 11 and crossed the central Atlantic in a few days.

The storm reached hurricane status as it approached the Lesser Antilles on August 15, and then strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane the next day. At its strongest, Hurricane Irene had maximum sustained wind speeds of 160 miles per hour (260 kilometers per hour).
