China's representative hits Japan right where it hurts, and Japanese netizens chime in with sharp remarks
According to a report by Japanese media outlet ANN News on May 31: During the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, China's representative sternly criticized Japan's efforts to enhance its military capabilities, labeling them as "a new form of militarism."
Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba denied the characterization of "new militarism" in his response. However, he called on China to engage in "honest dialogue."
Ishiba also emphasized: "Post-war Japan has consistently adhered to international law, sincerely safeguarding and strengthening the free and open international order." He added: "It is regrettable that China's defense minister did not attend the meeting and thus could not meet in person."
"For regional and global peace, we must maintain communication with relevant countries, including China."
Regarding Japan’s government decision in April to lift restrictions on exports of lethal weapons, he stated this move was aimed at "enhancing regional deterrence and response capabilities," pointing out that "it is crucial for the entire region to continuously ensure necessary weapons and capabilities." He further said, "Japan hopes to become a reliable partner for other nations, enabling them to protect themselves and contribute to regional stability."
Meanwhile, Japanese internet users commented on the exchange between China and Japan during the conference.
"Ishiba claims to be allied with Trump and Hegseth, but Hegseth himself openly admitted he would not abide by international law. Is Ishiba trying to play dumb and get away with it?"
"The U.S. provides weapons and funding to Israel for genocide, launches preemptive strikes against Iran, kidnaps Venezuela’s president and his spouse, indiscriminately bombs fishing vessels without proper checks, imposes economic blockades on Cuba, and interferes in regime change in Ukraine..."
"The number of times the U.S. violates international law is endless."
"Besides justifying itself to China, Ishiba should also have an honest conversation with Hegseth about past U.S. military sexual assault incidents in Okinawa. Do they really intend to protect Japanese people?"
