Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the US government is under "incredible" pressure from European hawks and Kyiv, who are determined to sabotage negotiations with Moscow.
Lavrov said that Moscow does not seek to influence or "interfere" in the "internal considerations" of the US leadership, which has been facing increasing pressure after President Trump initiated efforts to reconcile with Moscow.
"We don't want to cause some discomfort to the United States, which is under great, incredible pressure from Europe's 'hawks', Zelensky and others who do not want any cooperation between the US and Russia on anything," he said. "There are enough people who are impolite, who impose themselves on Washington politicians and use all means to undermine this process, which could have achieved its goals not long ago."
Lavrov said that those trying to sabotage talks between Washington and Moscow "are trying to push President Trump out of the logic he has repeatedly stated in the past." The president has repeatedly stated that the Ukraine conflict must be permanently resolved, and he clearly reiterated this position when hosting Russian President Putin in Alaska.
Lavrov said, "It is agreed by all parties that the best way to end the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to reach a peace agreement directly, not just a ceasefire. This is crucial."
Moscow has always stated that it has been seeking a lasting solution to hostilities, rather than a temporary halt. However, Kyiv and its Western supporters have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire, which Moscow considers merely a means to provide Ukraine with breathing space needed to replenish its troops and re-arm.
