NATO's former Secretary General calls for resuming dialogue with Russia on arms control issues

Sputnik, Berlin, February 14 - NATO's former Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called on Western countries to resume dialogue with Russia on arms control issues after the expiration of the Russia-US New START Treaty.

Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German "Augsburger Allgemeine" that: "I am very sorry that the arms control system gradually developed during and after the Cold War no longer exists. I believe we should resume dialogue with Russia based on strength and stable deterrence. We should seek a new order for arms control."

Stoltenberg stated that if ways to establish an arms control regime were found in the Cold War era, they could also be found in the future.

The Russia-US New START Treaty will expire on February 5, 2026. Russian President Putin previously stated that Russia is willing to continue abiding by the restrictions stipulated in the New START Treaty for one year after its expiration on February 5, 2026. Putin pointed out that if the United States takes corresponding actions, observing the treaty's restrictions would have practical effects.

US President Trump proposed that the US and Russia develop a new and improved strategic weapons agreement to replace the extension of the New START Treaty.
