Reference News Network, July 5 - According to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun, on July 5, the Cambodian government announced that it had reached an agreement with the United States in tariff negotiations. Both sides will soon issue a joint statement on reciprocal tariffs, but specific details of the agreement, including tariff rates, remain unclear. Following Vietnam, Cambodia has become the second Southeast Asian country to reach a tariff agreement with the Trump administration.

According to a statement released by the Cambodian government, on April 4, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol held an online consultation with Sarah Ehrmann, the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and Pacific Affairs at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Both sides reached consensus on the draft of the joint statement.

The Trump administration had previously stated its intention to impose a 49% reciprocal tariff on Cambodia, which is the highest rate faced by countries in Southeast Asia.

Cambodia's total exports in 2024 amounted to 26.2 billion U.S. dollars, with nearly 40% of its exported goods sold to the United States. The United States is Cambodia's largest export destination. Analysts believe that in order to alleviate the impact on its key industries such as the textile industry, Cambodia may have made concessions in areas such as expanding imports of American products.
