US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on the 7th that the US-China economic and trade talks will begin on the 10th. He also reiterated that China, as the world's second-largest economy, should no longer be considered a "developing country".
Bessent attended a hearing of the House Committee on Financial Services on the 7th. He declined to reveal details of the trade negotiations in the meeting, believing that it would harm the interests of the American people.
Bessent pointed out that the United States is negotiating with 18 major trading partners at full speed, and will first reach principled consensus before forming trade agreements.
However, Bessent believes that once the United States reaches an agreement with other countries, he expects these countries to abide by these consensuses.
Regarding Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer's plan to meet with China's economic high-level representatives in Switzerland this weekend, Bessent said that the two sides will start talking on the 10th, and whether the two countries will reach an agreement will ultimately be decided by US President Trump.
Bessent also mentioned in the hearing that it is time for China to graduate from the status of a "developing country", pointing out that as the world's second-largest economy, China should no longer be regarded as a developing country.
