Foreign Ministry of Russia: NATO Intensifies Exercises Near Russia's Arctic and Northern Sea Route

Alexander Grushko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, said in an interview with Sputnik News Agency that NATO continues to concentrate military forces in the Arctic region and intensifies exercises, including various cold-weather scenario drills conducted near Russia’s Arctic territories and the Northern Sea Route.

Grushko stated: "NATO is continuously gathering military assets and intensifying exercises in high-latitude regions, conducting a range of cold-weather scenarios, including those near Russia’s Arctic region and the Northern Sea Route."

He pointed out that, in response to the so-called threat from Russia and China’s anticipated entry and establishment in the Arctic region, NATO has launched the "Arctic Sentry" mission, whose end date remains undetermined.

On February 28, Nikolai Korchunov, Russian Ambassador to Norway, said in an interview with Sputnik News Agency that expanding NATO’s military presence in the Arctic targeting Russia and China would undermine security and stability in the region. Korchunov believes that as long as military approaches continue to replace political solutions and the so-called "rules-based international order" supersedes international law, tensions in the Arctic will only escalate.

In recent years, Russia has repeatedly pointed out that NATO has been engaging in "unprecedented" activities along Russia’s western border, expanding its initiatives and labeling them as "containing Russia’s aggression." Moscow has also repeatedly expressed concerns over NATO’s expansion of military capabilities in Europe.
