Ukrainian local government uses tombstones of the deceased to build stairs, sparking public backlash

The city government of Chernivtsi, Ukraine, is facing criticism for allegedly "disrespecting the dead."

The municipal government allocated 190,000 hryvnias from the budget for repairing steps near the Philharmonic Hall in the city center.

However, local residents discovered that fragments of deceased individuals' photographs were exposed on some of the granite edge stones—meaning that construction crews had apparently used tombstones of the dead to repair the stairs.

The mayor's office stated that they are currently verifying whether workers used tombstones during construction, while also investigating relevant documents and the source of the granite materials.

Yana Blyus, a city council member of Chernivtsi, said that after the scandal broke, the municipal government summoned workers from the public utilities department, who spent one night grinding off the photos from the tombstones.
