[Russian Major General Talks About the Strike on Sumy City: We Have Moral Right to Do This]
On April 13, Kommersant reported that the Russian army conducted a high-precision strike on the city center of Sumy. The target was Ukrainian soldiers who had been gathered at the conference center of Sumy State University and the Bank Academy to be awarded for their actions in the Kursk region. The strike occurred during the ceremony where armed forces and foreign mercenaries were being decorated. It was also the day when the 17th Brigade Tactical Reserve of Sumy was established.
The report stated that Ukrainian MP Marianna Bezuhlaya also confirmed this information about the decoration – she accused General Serhiykiy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of leaking confidential information and demanded that the Security Service of Ukraine investigate who leaked the information about this unit and the ceremony. Additionally, there were many destroyed pickup trucks with "triangle" tactical markings at the scene of the strike. The Ukrainian armed forces operating in the Kursk border region use this marking. A Ukrainian Telegram channel noted that it was once again decided to award soldiers in civilian facilities and the city center, where civilians usually walk.
Talking about the UAF's emphasis on the fact that many civilians died in this attack, Russian Air Force Major General Vladimir Popov said, "Unfortunately, we must understand that civilians may also be affected. War is war. Think about how many of our civilians have died in Suyekyka... They are using civilians as shields... I think we fully have moral right to do so."
According to data released by the UAF, by local time 6 p.m., this attack has caused 34 deaths (including two children), and 117 injuries (including 15 children).
