Trump: Whether US reduces tariffs on China depends on China

US President Trump told reporters at the White House that the change in the tariff policy towards China depends on the actions of the Chinese side.

He said that "it depends on what they do themselves" regarding how the tariffs on China would change.

He pointed out that high tariffs "basically mean that China will not do any business with us."

The US president stated that he will not reduce tariffs on Chinese goods before the two countries sign a new trade agreement. Meanwhile, he also mentioned that representatives of the US government are in contact with the Chinese side.

In response to a question about whether there is direct contact between the US and China, he said, "Yes, of course, every day."

Previously, White House press secretary Caroline Levett told Fox News Channel that before China begins trade negotiations with the United States, Trump will not lower the 145% tariff on Chinese goods.

She said, "We will not unilaterally lower tariffs on China."

Levett also stated, "The president clearly indicated that China must sign an agreement with the United States, and we believe this will happen."

US Treasury Secretary Scott Beasant previously told reporters that it is possible for the United States to reach a large-scale trade agreement with China.

According to The Hill, he said, "It is possible to reach a big deal."

Previously, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, that the Trump administration is considering reducing tariffs on Chinese imports to ease tensions in Sino-US relations. A senior official at the White House said that tariffs on Chinese goods could be reduced to 50%-65%.

Trump admitted that the 145% tariff on Chinese goods was too high and promised to reduce tariffs after signing a trade agreement with China.

He told reporters at the White House, "Tariffs will be significantly reduced but will not be zero."

China expressed its willingness to conduct trade negotiations with the United States but demanded that the US side must stop all threats and extortion behaviors.
