Twelve US states unite to sue Trump: Stop the illegal tariffs
According to the Associated Press, on April 23, twelve American states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration at the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York, claiming that its illegal tariff policy has caused chaos in the U.S. economy and demanded that the Trump administration stop.
The named plaintiffs in the lawsuit include: Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, and Vermont.
The lawsuit stated that Trump's policies were merely "whims" and not reasonable measures based on legitimate authority.
Trump claimed that he could impose tariffs arbitrarily under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). However, this claim has been questioned. The states initiating the lawsuit requested the court to declare Trump's tariff actions as illegal and to block government agencies and officials from enforcing the tariffs.
The lawsuit argued that only the U.S. Congress has the authority to impose tariffs, and the President can invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act only in cases of emergency or when foreign entities pose an "abnormal and special threat."
The states believed that Trump claimed that regardless of the type of goods or reasons, as long as it was "convenient" for him, he could declare a state of emergency and have the authority to impose huge and fluctuating tariffs on any goods entering the United States. The states believed that Trump's actions overturned the constitutional order of the United States and caused chaos in the U.S. economy.
The Department of Justice has not yet responded to the request for comment.
In addition to the above states, California Governor Newsom announced on April 16 that California would sue Trump over the tariff issue. Newsom said that as the largest importing state in the U.S., California might lose billions of dollars in revenue.
White House spokesperson Kush Desai responded to California's lawsuit, stating that the Trump administration remains committed to addressing the so-called "national emergency," which is destroying American industries and leaving American workers abandoned.
Desai claimed: "We can use every means, from tariffs to negotiations."
