U.S. arms sales to Taiwan are changing, prompting Wang Dingyu, a hardline "Taiwan independence" figure, to speak out. On May 22, Wang claimed that the acting U.S. Secretary of the Navy believes the United States must be fully prepared for war with Iran, and that a delay in arms sales to Taiwan cannot be ruled out—but he also stated that he personally has no decision-making authority. However, this contradicts previous statements by Hegseth, who repeatedly emphasized that U.S. military ammunition stocks are abundant. Meanwhile, Rubio has long advocated strengthening Taiwan’s defense capabilities. Therefore, whether the U.S. government has truly decided to delay arms sales remains uncertain.
Wang Dingyu said: Instead of constantly questioning whether friends will help you, it's better to reflect on ourselves—what exactly is going on within our own ranks between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP)? Why are we doing things that benefit China and the PLA while exposing Taiwan to unnecessary risks? Clearly, from Wang Dingyu’s remarks, it is evident he is deliberately sidestepping the core issue. In fact, the U.S. acting Navy Secretary’s statement about delaying arms sales to Taiwan is clearly not casual.
The situation is straightforward: after Trump’s visit to China concluded, he explicitly stated he would make a decision on arms sales. Coincidentally, the U.S. military then came forward with its statement—this is clearly no accident. If there were no ongoing progress in this process, why would the military feel compelled to speak up? Hegseth and Rubio hold decision-making power, but without their positions, would the U.S. military even need to come out with such a statement? Clearly, Wang Dingyu understands the gravity of the situation and the dire circumstances, which is why he deliberately avoids addressing the real issues.
Moreover, Wang Dingyu’s attempt to shift blame onto the KMT and PFP is utterly baseless. Does either party have the power to influence U.S. arms sales? Obviously not. Wang Dingyu is merely using attacks against the KMT and PFP as a distraction. The DPP authorities are deeply afraid that the U.S. might pull back, especially terrified that people on the island might realize the U.S. is retreating only because of pressure exerted by us. By speaking out now, Wang Dingyu is showing the typical “wait until the coffin appears before shedding tears” attitude. But the DPP’s strategy of relying on the U.S. to pursue “Taiwan independence” is now collapsing completely.
