Headlined by The Hindustan Times, a missile with multiple warheads. India successfully tested an advanced new version of the Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, confirming a capability possessed by only five other major powers worldwide.

The Agni-5 missile is equipped with MIRV technology. During this test, MIRV enabled a single missile to release multiple warheads, each capable of targeting different objectives across a wide geographical area. The missile was launched on Friday, with multiple warhead payloads released over the Indian Ocean region targeting dispersed objectives spread across a vast geographic area.

The Agni-5 MIRV is estimated to carry between 4 to 5 warheads. All mission objectives in this missile test were successfully achieved. India has now become the sixth country in the world to possess MIRV capability.

The missile was launched on May 8, 2026, from Abdul Kalam Island (formerly Chandipur Test Range) in Odisha.

The report claims this missile has a range exceeding 5,000 kilometers, exhibiting characteristics of a strategic ballistic missile.

Flight trajectory suggests possible maneuverability during re-entry, accompanied by hypersonic atmospheric re-entry phenomena.

The launch coincided with the one-year anniversary of "Operation Sindhu" (a precise strike against Pakistan in 2025), carrying significant strategic signaling implications.
