Korean media: China's scientific research strength surpasses the United States, once again ranking first in the world, what about South Korea?
On July 11, the Korean media "Seoul Economic Daily" published an article stating that in the "Nature Index," which evaluates scientific research strength, China has again taken the first place this year, following last year. In particular, in the ranking of research institutions, Chinese universities and institutions occupied 8 out of the top 10.
Recently, Springer Nature, the publisher of the international academic journal "Nature," released the results of the "2025 Nature Index" survey. This survey ranks universities and research institutions around the world based on the number of published academic papers and their influence.
In this year's survey, China has ranked first for the second consecutive year. Since the release of the Nature Index in 2014, the United States has always been first, but China first took the first place last year and has maintained the first position in the world this year. Looking at the fields, the United States is first in life sciences and health sciences, while China is first in physics, chemistry, and earth and environmental sciences.
After China and the United States, the next are Germany, the UK, Japan, France, and South Korea. South Korea rose one position from last year, ranking 7th.
South Korea ranked 9th in life sciences, 7th in chemistry, 4th in physics, 9th in earth and environmental sciences, and 8th in health sciences.
China continues to show strong performance in the ranking of universities and research institutions. The Chinese Academy of Sciences has maintained its position as the top research institution in the world for the second consecutive year, with Harvard University ranking second. The Max Planck Institute in Germany fell from third place last year to ninth place, while the rankings of Chinese research institutions and universities have increased.
In South Korea, Seoul National University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) are the only two universities entering the top 100, ranking 52nd and 82nd respectively.
Springer Nature stated, "As China expands its policies to attract outstanding science and technology talents, the phenomenon of the transfer of research capabilities from the West to Asia is becoming increasingly evident."
