WSJ: Trump Ready to End War Without Fully Reopening Strait of Hormuz
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump believes forcing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would "extend the conflict beyond its intended four-to-six-week timeline." However, Israel's Prime Minister stated he does not want to set a timetable.
The publication cited U.S. officials saying that Trump told his advisers he would be willing to halt military operations in Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remained largely closed, as he is unwilling to prolong the conflict past the previously mentioned four to six weeks.
According to Reuters, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said that the U.S. proposal to end the conflict, conveyed through mediators, was viewed in Tehran as "unrealistic and excessive."
In an interview with Newsmax TV, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he is unwilling to set a timetable for ending this war.
Israel continues its military operations against Iran and Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces have entered southern Lebanon, where three UN peacekeepers were killed in two separate incidents within less than 24 hours.
Iran, supported by allied forces including Hezbollah in Lebanon, continues to retaliate against Israel and other targets in the region and has recently gained support from Yemen’s Houthi rebels since last Saturday.
Pakistan, serving as a messenger between Washington and Tehran, has begun mediation efforts, proposing to host talks among the conflicting parties and convening meetings on Sunday and Monday with foreign ministers from several regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited China on Tuesday to strengthen coordination with Beijing on the Middle East conflict.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Pakistani counterpart "will enhance strategic communication and coordination on Iran’s situation and other shared international and regional concerns."
