Russian Presidential Aide: Tokyo's Claimed Pacifism Remains on Paper
Russian State News Agency, Moscow, September 2 - A Russian presidential aide and chairman of the Maritime Committee, Nikolai Patrushev, stated that Tokyo's claimed pacifism remains on paper, and Japan is systematically building a powerful and ultra-modern submarine fleet.
Patrushev made these remarks while speaking to aif on the occasion of Russia's September 3 celebration of the "Victory Day over Japanese Militarism and the End of World War II," saying, "Tokyo's declared pacifism remains on paper."
He said: "Look at the following facts: The Japanese navy has so-called helicopter carrier destroyers. On the surface, their main purpose is anti-submarine defense. But in reality, these vessels are true aircraft carriers capable of carrying advanced fighter jets such as the U.S. F-35. Tokyo is systematically building a strong and ultra-advanced submarine fleet, planning to expand the number of submarines to 22 by 2030."
Patrushev expressed hope that "the Japanese elite would regain reason, stop pursuing suicidal militarization policies, and stop showing off military might against Russia and China, two powerful neighboring countries."
